FIRE DESTROYS GAGE SANCTUARY -- During the afternoon of Saturday June 14, a fire destroyed the sanctuary of First Christian Church, Gage. The rest of the building is so badly damaged that all but the Fellowship Hall has been torn down. The Fellowship Hall suffered extensive smoke damage. The fire marshal report shows an electrical problem started the fire in the attic. It is widely believed, but not proven, that lightning was the cause of the electrical fire. Rev. Nancy Taylor Woods is the pastor of this 101-year-old congregation. All of the pews, Chalice Hymnals, Bibles as well as Rev. Woods robes and stoles were lost in the fire. The members of the congregation are understandably shocked and are grieving their loss. Week of Compassion has sent a “solidarity grant” and when the congregation’s losses are better evaluated, more help will be needed. A representative from Church Extension will meet with members of the congregation and Rev. Woods on July 9 to help with this process.

The sanctuary was completely destroyed, but the fellowship hall
and kitchen may survive after lots of careful cleaning to remove smoke damage.
